Gender and Sexuality

Gender incongruence, also known as gender dysphoria, refers to a condition where an individual’s gender identity does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. It involves a deep discomfort or distress experienced due to the incongruence between one’s assigned gender and their experienced or expressed gender identity. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people often suffer from various forms of discrimination, stigma and social exclusion – including physical and psychological abuse, bullying, persecution, or economic alienation. Moreover, experiences of discrimination may occur in various areas, such as employment, education and health care, but also in the context of meaningful interpersonal relationships, including family.

It’s important to note that gender incongruence is not a mental illness in itself, but the distress associated with it (gender dysphoria) can be clinically significant and may require support, including psychological counselling and, in some cases, medical interventions such as hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgery.

At 2Y Mental Health, understanding and acknowledging gender incongruence is crucial for creating inclusive and supportive environments for individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Acceptance and affirmation of diverse gender identities are essential for promoting mental health and well-being among people experiencing gender incongruence. I am proud to provide such an environment for all. My understanding and empathetic approach allow myself to provide individualised support tailored to the unique needs and experiences of my gender incongruence clients.
