Gender and Sexuality

Gender incongruence, also known as gender dysphoria, refers to a condition where an individual’s gender identity does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. It involves a deep discomfort or distress experienced due to the incongruence between one’s assigned gender and their experienced or expressed gender identity. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people often suffer from various forms of discrimination, stigma and social exclusion – including physical and psychological abuse, bullying, persecution, or economic alienation. Moreover, experiences of discrimination may occur in various areas, such as employment, education and health care, but also in the context of meaningful interpersonal relationships, including family.

It’s important to note that gender incongruence is not a mental illness in itself, but the distress associated with it (gender dysphoria) can be clinically significant and may require support, including psychological counselling and, in some cases, medical interventions such as hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgery.

Gender and sexuality are among the most intimate parts of who we are, yet for many people they can also become sources of confusion, fear, or conflict. The journey of self-discovery is not always simple—some carry the weight of shame, rejection, or silence for many years, while others feel torn between who they are inside and the expectations of the world around them. These struggles are not flaws, but reflections of the courage it takes to live authentically in a world that does not always understand.

At our practice, we believe healing requires more than labels or strategies—it begins with creating a safe space where every part of you can be seen and accepted. We use an integrative approach that combines evidence-based therapies such as CBT, ACT, and Schema Therapy, etc with the gentle depth of hypnotherapy and guided imagery. This allows clients to release the emotional pain of judgement, uncover their true voice, and build resilience in the face of challenges.

From a holistic perspective, questions of gender and sexuality can also be seen as part of the soul’s unfolding journey—an invitation to expand self-understanding, embrace authenticity, and discover the strength that comes from living one’s truth. In this process, identity is not reduced to a problem to be solved, but honoured as a unique path of growth, healing, and self-love.
